What Is Day Treatment (Partial Hospitalization)?

Day treatment, or PHP, is a short-term, highly structured mental health program that sits between inpatient hospitalization and routine outpatient therapy. It offers intensive therapeutic support without requiring an overnight stay.

At Engage Wellness, individuals attend treatment 5–6 hours per day, several days per week, participating in a combination of individual therapy, group therapy, family involvement (when appropriate), psychiatric care, and medication management. At the end of each treatment day, participants return home to sleep in their own bed and remain connected to loved ones.

This model provides the best of both worlds—intensive clinical help and the stability of returning home each night.

Who Is Day Treatment Right For?

Day treatment at Engage Wellness Acton may be a good fit if you:

  • Are experiencing moderate to severe mental health symptoms

  • Need more structure than weekly therapy or IOP
  • Are stepping down from inpatient care

  • Are stepping up because outpatient therapy isn’t enough

  • Need daily accountability, skill-building, and therapeutic support

  • Do not require 24/7 medical monitoring

Day treatment is typically appropriate for adults who:

  • Can safely return home each night

  • Can participate in group-based programming

  • Are motivated to heal, learn, and participate in treatment

If you’re unsure whether PHP, IOP, or outpatient care is right for you, our clinical team will guide you through your options.

Our Multidisciplinary Care Team

This integrated approach ensures that your emotional well-being, psychological needs, and practical circumstances are addressed together—not in isolation.

Length of Stay & How We Measure Progress

There is no fixed length of stay for day treatment. Each participant’s time in the program is tailored to symptom severity, functional needs, personal goals, and ongoing clinical assessment. Throughout the program, your team uses formal symptom measures, safety check-ins, therapeutic feedback, and your own reflections to evaluate progress and adjust the treatment plan as needed.

Family & Support System Involvement

With your permission, we can involve family members or trusted supports in your care. This may include psychoeducation, collaborative sessions, or family therapy when appropriate. Engaging your support system helps build a stronger foundation for recovery outside the treatment setting.
